Making red wine can be a fun and challenging task, but only if you know how to do it properly. There are many more options that are available for the wine maker. The techniques are basically the same as making white wine, but there is one big difference. When extracting the color from the grape skins the maker can completely change the style of the wine that they are making. There are several steps to making red wine.

The Best Wine Needs the Best Grapes

If you are going to make the best red wine then you are going to need the best grapes that you can find. This could be a little difficult because for most people they don’t have the option of going out and picking the grapes straight from the vine. Most people have one or two options for getting grapes, going to the store and getting whatever they have. However there is another option for you, you can always see if there are any local places for you to go and pick your own grapes, this could yield better results when making wine.

The De-Stemming Process

After finding the grapes that you wish to use, comes the de-stemming process. In order for the wine to get the red color that is needed for a red wine the grapes need to keep their skins, but the stalks must be removed. This is usually accomplished by passing the grapes through a de-stemmer while the grapes are being de-stemmed they are also gently crushed and then put into an open topped fermentation container. This is a very important step if this isn’t done right then the wine could end up with an extremely bitter taste.

Next Comes Fermentation

Once the de-stemming is complete then the grapes are ready to go into the fermentation process. A little bit of yeast is put on top of the grapes and then very carefully and gently mixed into the grapes. It’s important to remember that after a day or two some of the grapes and skins will start to float to the top, in order to make sure that the color and taste of the wine is to your satisfaction then these need to be pushed back down to the bottom of the container.

When the Color Is Just Right

When the color of the wine looks just right then it’s time to press the grapes. This is basically removing all of the skins and any other solid pieces. Once all the pieces have been removed then the wine is put into a sealed fermentation container, where it will continue to ferment.

When to Bottle the Wine

After fermentation and maturation then comes the bottling. Most wines will need to stay in the barrel for at least a year. Taking the proper time to let the wine ferment is a key process in wine making. When this process is done then the wine can be bottled.

Enjoy

Some wines are made to drink once they are bottled right away, while others are best enjoyed after they mature for a few years. Once you figure out and decide which way your wine will taste best, wait the appropriate amount of time, open a bottle and enjoy.
