If you're like most people, every square inch of storage room is packed to the gills. For those with bikes, this means that they share the space with items that can puncture their tires and damage the frames. Getting the bicycle tires off the concrete is particularly important when you're not going to use the bike for extended periods.
Older models of bike racks often were simply hooks and you hung the bike by the front wheel. Today, most manufacturers don't recommend you use that type of bicycle rack. Some of the bikes on the market today have wheels with a quick release feature. If you use a rack or hook that attaches to the wheel, it can trigger the release and cause damage to the bike if it crashes on the floor of the storage area. Not only that, even if it doesn't release, you can cause damage to the rims of the wheel by forcing them to hold the weight of the bike at one point on the wheel rim rather than distributed evenly as it would be when you rode.
Bicycle storage racks lift the bike off the floor. This is particularly beneficial if you have a change in the temperature of the storage area. Often with the cold weather, the air in the tires contract and the bike's tires flatten. The flattened tire can cause cracks in the tires as well as damage to the sidewalls. While this saves you a great deal of hassle when you start the next season of bicycling, it's a big savings of money too. There's no need to replace tires sooner than necessary.
People that use storage sheds or rented storage areas often find that space is at a minimum. The bike storage racks can be hanging racks or ones that sit on the ground. Both of these selections give you versatility to for the best available bike storage based on your needs. You can use the ground storage method if hanging the bike on the wall is not an available option.
The bike storage racks also use the two support points on a bike that prevent damage to the tires and frame. The use of two points on the frame prevents damage to the bike by distributing the weight evenly as it supports the bike. It also makes the bicycle far more secure on the bike rack.
While older bike racks tended to fit the models available at the time, newer bikes may not fit the racks. When you invest in a more modern bike rack, make certain that the rack allows for adjustments as your taste in bikes or bikes that are more modern appear on the market.
Storage bike racks also should be made of materials that prevent chipping and scratching of the bike paint. Look for rough or sharp edges on the bike storage rack causing potential damage to your cherished bicycle. In addition, check for bike racks that offer the most convenient method of storage. If you have extra room and use your bike frequently, a floor mount bike rack might be your best option. However, if you have long winter months where you don't use the bike, a wall hanging bike rack may be your best method of storage.
