As you go to a grocery store and occasionally buy extra candy for a holiday such as Halloween, do you ever think to buy one less bag and donate that money to the local food bank? Not only would you be saving unneeded calories, but you would also be donating much needed food donations. What if others spent less on candy and did the same thing? What kind of impact would that make on hunger here in the U.S.? Most spend around $5 for a bag of candy. That same $5 ones spends equals an average 35 meals in the U.S. If we think about this on a bigger scale, the numbers are really haunting. It is shocking to discover the amount of money spent by Americans extra food which totals in the billions of dollars.
The National Retail Federation expects that Americans will spend:

$5.8 billion dollars for costumes, candy & decorations, this year alone-

An average of $66 dollars per person which is a 23% increase versus last year which is 10% Less and equals 35 Meals or 4 Billion Meals nationally.

Close on the heels of a multi-billion dollar Halloween, is a multi-billion dollar spending spree for mid-term elections. When billions of dollars are seemingly wasted, and could have been put to better use, it's hard not to point out.Total spending by both parties, political action committees, and outside sources, is estimated at $4 billion which is the highest ever in a non-presidential year, and up a whopping 43% versus the $2.8 billion spent for mid-term elections 4 years ago (according to Center for Responsive Politics). Many sources report a huge range in dollars spent for each vote won, from a low of around $11 to a high of over $450 (both parties have participants across this spectrum). So given the vast disparity in spending to win votes, we ask ourselves:
1) How much spending is actually necessary to get a candidate's message across, and more importantly, how much more was actually spent?
2) How much money is spent on negative/smear ads? Do people actually believe these? How do they make people feel about both candidates?
3) How would voters respond to the following?
If each of person reduced their spending by a mere 10%, we'd have $580 MILLION dollars to donate over 4 billion meals! That's over 80 meals, or 11 weeks of a solid meal per day, for each of the 49 million food-insecure Americans. If you asked people if they would be willing to spend 10% less on candy or campaigning and donate 35 meals to hungry Americans that a majority wouldn't hesitate to do so.
So the next time you're torn between buying an extra food item "just because", think twice. Save yourself the extra calories and donate that money to those who need it more. This will get us one step closer to fighting the world hunger crisis.
